Become a Master Energy Advisor

The Master Energy Advisor (MEA®) designation is awarded to highly experienced Energy Advisors (EAs) who are Full CACEA members. This designation recognizes advanced expertise, promotes professional excellence, and provides a clear career pathway.
The MEA® designation signals to industry stakeholders the holder’s proven reliability, competency, and professionalism. MEAs® are CACEA members and registered as Energy Advisors with Natural Resources Canada.

Eligibility Requirements
CACEA is currently reviewing the application and requirements, so there may be changes to the information below.
Applicants must meet all the following criteria:
- “Full” CACEA Membership category in good standing, including:
- Current Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance
- Adherence to CACEA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct
- Current Service Organization (SO) verification letter
- Paid membership dues
- Continuing Education
- Minimum of 25 hours of cumulative CACEA Continuing Education Credits in the 12 months prior to applying over the preceding 12-month period1
- Professional Experience
- 8-10 years as a continuously practicing and licensed NRCan REA, including related services across all sectors with relevant industry experience
AND - 500 completed current ERS-version labels of a diverse variety (new, existing, different types of dwellings and labels).

- CACEA Engagement
- Active participation in CACEA within the past 2 years (e.g., committees, working groups, EA Councils, AGMs, or Member Forum activity)
- Professional Conduct
- Demonstrated commitment to CACEA’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct (the committee may request additional information)
- Documentation and Verification
- Provide all required documents (see Application Process below)
- Be prepared to provide additional verification if requested
- Application Fee
- $250.00 + tax
- Note: The fee will be applied to the MEA® membership for successful candidates. A $50 admin fee is non-refundable for unsuccessful applicants. The committee will not review applications without the payment.

Application Process
Applications are now closed. New applications will open in April–May 2026.
Applicants must submit the following:
- MEA® Application Form
- Four Client References
- References must:
- Be from engagements completed within the past 2 years
- Cover a mix of project types (e.g., existing homes, new construction, consultations)
- Be submitted by different clients (not templated) (owner, client, or SO).
- References must:
- CACEA and Industry Engagement
- Submit a list detailing engagement in the past 2 years, including:
- Training (development or delivery)
- Speaking engagements
- Research, white papers, case studies
- Participation in industry councils, committees, or working groups (Blogs and social media posts are excluded)
- Include contact information for at least two examples.
- Submit a list detailing engagement in the past 2 years, including:
- Consulting/Analysis Report
- Include a redacted professional report from the past 2 years that demonstrates your expertise as an advisor and ‘consultant’. The report must include:
- Overview of project
- Data and technical analysis
- Comprehensive recommendations

This will be evaluated for building science expertise, depth of analytical thinking, consultancy skill, and communication clarity. Please note, EnergGuide Rating System Renovation Upgrade Reports and similar documentation are not considered eligible for this requirement.
Review and Designation
The MEA® Committee reviews completed applications twice annually, based on published deadlines.
