Beyond the Blower Door: Advanced Air Tightness for Complex Low-Rise
Air tightness targets are tightening, and townhouses, row houses and stacked multiplexes are where builders most often fall short. Everyone knows the number they have to hit — far fewer know what to do when the building doesn’t get there.
In this closing session of the EA Exchange, four experienced energy advisors discuss the advanced testing and diagnostics behind consistently good air tightness results: multi-fan and guarded testing on stacked and back-to-back units, and the field techniques that locate leakage, from infrared to smoke. The panel also tackles the questions that come up on every job site — party-wall air barriers, mid-construction testing, setting expectations at IDP, answering the cost objection, and where products like AeroBarrier help versus become a crutch.
